Bradford Manufacturing Futures champions young Sustainability Leaders

26 Sept 2025

Sustainability Leaders of the Future (SLF)

The Sustainability Leaders of the Future (SLF) initiative will be launched at Bradford Manufacturing Weeks next month to help shape the future of Bradford’s industrial sector and open the door of opportunity for our district’s young people. Olivia Watson, Apprentice ESG Coordinator at Keighley-based Teconnex, will lead the SLF team in hosting their inaugural event during October’s Bradford Manufacturing Weeks.

Consisting of young professionals, the SLF team is running workshops to inspire local school children and highlight a growing focus on sustainable practices in manufacturing.  SLF is a new initiative from Bradford Manufacturing Futures and is dedicated to supporting skills development and empowering emerging talent in sustainability.

BMF partners have experience of hosting events as part of Bradford Manufacturing Weeks and the SLF workshops are another string to their bow in bringing schools and young people together via learning events.

BMF is a cross-sector partnership including government, manufacturers, and the University of Bradford, who came together to develop the Local Industrial Decarbonisation Project (LIDP).  Over £1bn of potential investment in clean energy and fuel switching has been identified by BMF to sustain Bradford’s industrial prosperity and protect 24,000 local jobs.  BMF play an important role in helping Bradford deliver on its climate change ambitions as well as bringing investment and green jobs to the district.

David Calder, Chair of BMF said,

“Inspiring the future work force is something that the BMF is seeking to achieve as well as striving to be the trusted voice of industry whilst navigating the transition to net zero carbon and clean growth working.”

Olivia Watson, Apprentice ESG Coordinator, Teconnex said

“I am delighted to be leading the Sustainability Leaders of the Future (SLF) team at the first event during Bradford Manufacturing Weeks. The workshops give young people the chance to explore how sustainability and manufacturing are connected, helping them to see the wide range of opportunities available while encouraging and nurturing the workforce of the future.”
